This is a very good tool for APM. It gives very good internals of the applications and the user experience. We have implemented it in our Test and Pod environment for our business-critical application with the UEM. We also have the various dashboards for the app support team, Infra team and the business folks. Along with the dashboard displayed on the large-screen TV in the offshore monitoring team.
  • Best tool for APM.
  • Best user interface.
  • Very frequent releases.
  • License cost is high in some forms of the JVM configuration which becomes very expensive.
Dynatrace is easy to use and deploy and the user interface is awesome. The dashboards are super easy to add and configure and share. Forum is awesome and the the product incorporates the features requested by the users.
My view: this application performance monitoring tool is one of the best ones I have used...

We are currently using Dynatrace across our organization. We've consolidated previous Dynatrace applications like Gomez, DCRUM, and AppMon. Dynatrace has addressed many issues and a single app is much better for our organization The installation is by far our favorite part. The ease of installation compared to AppMon is tenfold. We can easily deploy and with the OneAgent grabbing all the process automatically - gives our teams time to focus on other tasks.

In addition, the AI finds root cause - again allowing our team to focus on other issues!
  • Installation.
  • Root cause analysis.
  • Dashboarding.
  • Plugins can be difficult.
Amazing for all apps - especially Java. We love the dashboards and the ability to bring in other tools as well. Very easy to use and easy to train other users.

Currently Dynatrace is helping us with transparent, easy, and deep observability of our managed infrastructure and micro-service based apps. We quickly installed and started having deep monitoring and observability, and with Davis, we have instant insights into problems we could only have had with hours of engineering root cause analysis in the past.
  • Auto discovery and complete observability without any tweaks or configuration
  • Root cause analysis and alter correlation into a changing micro-service environment
  • Greater transparency on licensing costs, cost optimization, and cost projection of activating Dynatrace features
Dynatrace is well suited for start-ups looking to quickly and easily monitor apps having business impact.

We are using Dynatrace to monitor most of our in-house Java and .net applications for APM. We use real user monitoring and sessions replay as well for some of these applications. Davis's AI enables us to work on other important tasks rather than to chase problem after problem. Without Dynatrace we would spend hours resolving issues. After Dyantrace was running, our MTTR dropped to minutes.
  • MTTR for problem resolution
  • Automatic root cause analysis
  • Pricing model for custom metrics.
  • Pricing model for synthetic monitoring when running solely on-prem.
Dynatrace is great for doing deep dives into code problems. Being able to have a single pane of glass to go to when problems come up allows us to reduce our MTTR to minutes instead of hours. Integrating with our DevOps pipelines allows for faster discovery of code problems before they hit production.

Our software delivery teams in IT are using the tool primarily for reactive troubleshooting, and plan to expand the use of it for proactive monitoring and alerting in the next quarter. It has helped us troubleshoot issues quicker, and understand improvement opportunities related to scalability or infrastructure configuration. The tool has allowed us to double in size in terms of users and clients with minimal issues related to performance.
  • Ability to see the full stack and how the layers are related.
  • Root cause analysis of problems that are identified with minimal effort.
  • Automate console app monitoring (converting console apps to services).
Works well as a starting point for troubleshooting issues with web applications and APIs. Scenarios that were a bit more challenging are console apps and WPF apps.

We are currently using Dynatrace to investigate both general system monitoring and DevOps pipeline enhancements. We currently have been moving to leverage Davis as a necessary way to proactively and predictively manage stability in thousands of applications. Scaling can be a large hurdle within our organization, but Dynatrace is showing us that it's up for the challenge.
  • Scaling
  • Detection
  • Licensing
  • Business analytics
Dynatrace is well suited to large complex ecosystems where simpler tools just cannot provide support. It is extremely good fo finding needles in the haystack. For smaller businesses and deployments, Dynatrace may be a bit out of price range. The other benefit is the less complex platform model. The tires come with the car.

We currently leverage the APM capabilities of Dynatrace within our organization. It is primarily deployed to benefit our Application/Development teams, at the moment. Currently, Dynatrace provides the ability to allow for application tracing across different applications and teams that have dependencies/relationships with each other.
  • Application fault tracing between different applications
  • Pure Path views into all supporting components of an application
  • Monitoring of applications that are developed in programming languages that require intermediate-language compilation (C++) still requires integration at the code-level.
Major application deployment for our company leveraged this as a means of providing real-time fault detection. Doesn't currently have visibility (in our implementation--not a failing of the product) to infrastructure, but I'm advocating my best to remedy that.

We succesfully resell Dynatrace as part of our Managed Services portfolio. Both we and our customers value the insights delivered by Dynatrace and the intuitive way the information is delivered. Since the migration to the new Dynatrace platform, including the One Agent implementations, usage has become even more easy and valuable.
  • Ease of implementation
  • Full stack monitoring
  • Pricing model is complicated
Dynatrace is well suited in a situation where our customers are moving from on-premises to cloud environments. The extensive insights from Dynatrace give us a good baseline and information customers can use to guarantee quality for their end-users.

We use Dynatrace mostly in the pre-production environment to identify any performance issues before we promote code to production. Dynatrace is used by separate business units but we are considering rolling it out across the organization. By using Dynatrace, we've prevented many performance issues going to production and prevented performance issues in production as well.
  • Easy to identify any performance issues by back-tracking any dependency calls
  • Automatically identifies the root cause of any performance problem
  • Dashboards: Currently we don't have the option to compare dashboard data between two time-frames
  • Easy to group multiple database instances into one single database
With Dynatrace, it's easy to back-track any transaction. We are also using AppDynamics in production but developers are struggling to identify any root cause if there are any performance issues. However, in Dynatrace it's easy to back-track and identify any issue quickly. Dynatrace UI is user friendly compared to AppDynamics. I think Dashboard is nice, but there is no way I can compare between two time-frames. This would help me to compare test results between two releases easily.

Dynatrace Review

Dynatrace is used by infrastructure support teams, web development teams, platform DevOps teams, and the service desk. It addresses service response time issues, availability issues, bad code issues, and resource utilization issues.
  • Installs easily with no modifications needed to target applications.
  • Provides detailed PurePath code-level visibility to all application transactions not just sampled ones.
  • Dynatrace could improve the license model. They license host units, DEMs, and metrics differently.
  • Price model for host units is based on host memory size and this can be costly.
It is well suited for Java applications, Windows servers, Linux servers, cloud applications. It is good at web availability, real user monitoring of web sites and java applications. It not as good at frameworks like weblogic due to the admin console and other web logic server issues and the T3 protocol.

Our current and future ecommerce platforms are enabled with Dynatrace for application debugging and insight, most importantly due to a variety of application platforms and even custom applications developed internally. It is used company-wide by our ebusiness organization.
  • Level of detail digging into supported platforms.
  • Problem AI & notification.
  • SaaS model user interface can be difficult/confusing to navigate.
  • While many plugins are available, many involve detailed tweaking to get right.
Well suited where you can implement the agent on as many platforms/hosts/environments that contribute to the whole as possible to eliminate gaps in service flows. For very proprietary application platforms perhaps not operating with widely-accepted standards the level of detail you may gain could only be host/utilization/resource statistics, less useful.

Dynatrace is being used to monitor key business critical applications supporting sales and member processes. It is primarily used by the IT department, but it is currently being expanded to member services and marketing. We have utilized Dynatrace to analyze and resolve critical failures and performance degradation in these applications as we move forward on our digital journey.
  • Usability and user adoption.
  • Ease of installation and configuration.
  • Licensing model and utilization.
  • Managed environment upgrades.
Dynatrace is exceptionally well suited for classic performance monitoring and even extends further into problem analysis. Given its cost structure however it is not well suited for all types of monitoring and cheaper options will often be used to augment Dynatrace. When this occurs however one loses the critical correlation and single pane of view insights into the whole of application performance.

Dynatrace blankets our primary customer and investor portals. It provides critical operational support to the infrastructure and application teams in order to identify and resolve problems rapidly. Dynatrace also provides major business metrics that are reported and socialized across Senior Leadership and above.
  • Easy to manage and project license consumption/spend.
  • Dynatrace self-instruments services and it is lightning fast to onboard new hosts.
  • It can be challenging to teach others Dynatrace, as troubleshooting is the culmination of skills acquired over time, and mileage varies greatly among experience and skillset in a support department.
  • Guided AI assistant when doing tasks, such as dashboard creations, graph creation, alert creation.
Dynatrace is very well positioned as a the choice APM at most any web firm on the internet that has SLAs and is customer-focused. A little more UI polish would be a nice addition, more simplified and inline with their competitors - alas, Dynatrace is in its own league in the APM space.

We use Dynatrace for event management and digital user experience monitoring. We also use it to help identify problems before they become a large issue or outage. It helps that they have an office local in Detroit. Dynatrace is out central monitoring tool! Support and consulting are really great also.
  • Self discovery
  • Event management
  • Better dashboards
  • Email capabilities for dashboards via PDF
Great for monitoring customer-facing apps, like a website, and for correlating events - it's easy to integrate into Service Now for a single pane of glass. Dashboarding needs to be more robust as many departments want to see how their systems are doing at a glance. API is great which makes this a true platform for integration.

Dynatrace is used to monitor all of our critical systems including databases, VMware, Linux servers, rancher clusters, and cloud infrastructure. It is primarily used by operations and dev teams to troubleshoot and monitor our apps and systems. We need 100% uptime and Dynatrace helps us get there.
  • Service flow does a good job of showing the app-to-app dependencies and downstream issues.
  • Alerting and integration makes it easy to know when a critical problem arises.
  • Host license management is non-existent. Needs way better visibility and reporting.
  • Not much native support for web-methods.
Dynatrace does great at baselining applications and letting you know when an app is outside of its normal thresholds. We have legacy apps that throw errors all the time and need to be able to ignore the normal amount of errors. The frequent issue functionality solves this problem.

We use Dynatrace across the company to monitor our critical business applications so that our customers are getting the best experience possible from us. Dynatrace allows us to deploy faster with less man power than competing products and helps identify issues automatically.
  • OneAgent deployment is really easy.
  • AI baselines and automatic problem identification.
  • Licensing model complexities for large companies.
  • Better APIs to bring more transparencies to the usage of the tool (dem usage, host unit usage, etc).
We use Dynatrace on a large chunk of our Openshift implementation and it works well for us there. It's easy to spin up a container with our OneAgent ready to go. We would love to see more mainframe support in the product so we can migrate off of the AppMon product.

Dynatrace is being used with the IT department of the organization. It has reduced the speed to resolution of environmental issues and provided more insight into how the environment is performing overall. It also easily integrates into other software, allowing for the ability to automate problem resolution for recurring issues.
  • Dynatrace is easy to deploy. The previous APM that my organization used required manual configuration for each new deployment. Dynatrace saves the team substantial time by doing this for us.
  • Dynatrace alerting integrates into a number of platforms, which has allowed us to spend less time with "eyes on glass" and more time implementing new tools.
  • Dynatrace does not provide an easy way of tracking license usage and growth. Environment growth must be manually looked up, instead of providing any kind of alerts that the environment may be about to hit the license cap.
Dynatrace is well suited for large, complex environments where tracking down issues could be tedious and time-intensive. Its ability to determine root-cause for issues is highly accurate and has saved us a large amount of time. It does not perform as well when the environment has a number of small issues that arise during the day, as problems will be opened for each environmental "blip".

We use it for our 3 main applications. We also use DEM for user experience and also synthetic test across different websites and APIs. We instrument those complex software and Dynatrace helps us to find the root cause. Thanks a lot to DAVIS. She is great! The teams are not in the tool that much yet but we are getting there. We assist them when they find major issues. The tool is so great that within a few clicks we are able to save a lot of time pointing to the right cause. We also provide the tool to the dev team for them to analyse the code they deploy. Sometimes the code is badly coded and with Dynatrace we are able to find either glitches or performance issues after a deployment. We save tons of times with Dynatrace and we also see the full stack which is so great. The manager and the business are also really interested in this because in the past they had no visibility at all on their software. We are all a software company now so this is really important to be able to detect issues and performance issues rapidly.
  • End to end monitoring.
  • Find root cause of issues.
  • More user-friendly interface.
  • Cheaper license would be good.
When there is a big issue with a lot of components ... Dynatrace is really great.

  • Application Monitoring
  • Troubleshooting
  • Help in automation of deployment for feature services
  • Upgrades should be made easy
It's best suited for performance monitoring, anomaly detection, and troubleshooting. Log analysis could be included instead of requiring an extra license, sometimes it gets complicated where process group detection rules apply. Some search and filter functionalities can be enhanced. It should have option to download reports to csv or some other format.

Dynatrace is being used in our application development department, primarily to detect, prevent and troubleshoot issues in Production, but also to assist with testing in lower environments. We use the tool with a variety of technologies, and for a variety of applications (internal and customer facing) of wildly differing sizes.
  • Issue Detection and Correlation
  • User Experience Management and Tracking
  • Cost
  • No Safeguard for Licensing Consumption, which could lead to large, unexpected costs
Dynatrace is a highly powerful, highly advanced, monitoring tool. It is capable of keeping tabs on the entire application stack for many, many applications. It is highly scalable, easy to implement and quite verbose in the information that it provides. However, it may not be ideally suited for all use cases. Be cognizant of what you are looking to do and remember that you don't always need to use a chainsaw to slice bread.

We do all of our development in house (Java on WebLogic/Tomcat) we use Dynatrace primarily to track and monitor user performance. We started as an Appmon and Synthetic Classic Customer back in the day and are now on the new Dynatrace platform. However, our primary use case hasn't changed. We are currently working on a massive rewrite and targeting microservices (Kubernetes/Docker) this was the primary driver for us switching from AppMon to New DynaTrace. The primary business issues it addresses for us are numerous. Being able to get insight into into important business transactions like claim processing and batch processing are vital to our business. The product is primarily used within our ISS organization however not all those users are technical.
  • Tracing user actions click by click
  • Monitoring and Alerting on critical Business Transactions
  • Tracing hotspots in database queries
  • I wish that the New Dynatrace had all the functionality of Legacy AppMon
  • I wish that the New Dynatrace had better documentation. AppMon seems to have much more flushed out info
  • I wish that it was easier to "clone" created environments. There are many things in Dynatrace that you get stuck creating multiple times.
Dynatrace is extremely useful as a triage and diagnostic tool. Especially if being used by technical people. It can do monitoring and alerting but the configuration of it still seems a bit convoluted to me. If your primary use is not technical you may run into issues. It is definitely a very robust platform and easy to get lost in.
